About Us

Together, SITES and Affiliations extend the reach of the Smithsonian beyond Washington, D.C., by bringing its high-quality content, resources, and expertise to people across the nation through collaborations with museums and cultural organizations. SITES is the Smithsonian's main exhibits ambassador beyond Washington, D.C. For more than 70 years, the organization has traveled approximately 40 exhibitions annually to hundreds of U.S. cities and towns from coast to coast, where they are viewed by millions of people. Museum on Main Street is a Smithsonian outreach program that, through a partnership with state humanities councils, brings traveling exhibitions, educational resources and programming to under-served small towns across America through their own local museums, historical societies and other cultural venues. Through scholarly initiatives, public programs, professional development, exhibitions, and more, the Smithsonian Affiliations network of more than 200 organizations works in collaboration with the Smithsonian to catalyze critical conversations in their communities and help their audiences better understand the world around them. |
