  • AATA Online: Introducing a New User Experience!
    AATA Online (aata.getty.edu) is a free research database comprising over 148,000 abstracts of literature related to the conservation and preservation of material cultural heritage. This poster introduces a new interface for this essential research tool for objects conservation and collections care. The new interface includes greatly expanded features and functionality as well as DOIs and links to online-only literature for easy accessibility.   • Collection Practices for Education and Public Learning
    Our work has identified specific instances where patterns of collecting and documentation have limited the educational utility of collections and created barriers to the types of investigations that can be supported by collections.   • Earthquakes, Hurricanes, and Eruptions! Oh My!
    In 2018, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park entered an "Increased Volcanic Incident" during which the park's landscape was dramatically altered more than it had been in over 200 years. Also during this time, in what was called "incident within an incident" a hurricane warning was issued to Hawai'i Island and a wildland fire broke out. This poster presents how the park's Cultural and Natural History collections were protected through over 60,000 earthquakes, 58 inches of rain, and other surprising risks.   • Legal Considerations for Taxidermy
    This poster focuses on two main considerations for taxidermy in your collections by outlining, legal/ethical considerations and, identifying and eliminating hazardous taxidermy. It introduces the many laws related to taxidermy mounts and explores NAGPRA- related ethical considerations.   • Leveraging Digitized Collections for Learning: EPIC Bioscience
    Learn how a team of museum educators, scientists, and learning researchers are engaging middle school students in authentic science investigations via data collection from and analysis of digitized collections. This poster describes the process used to select optimal collections for online learning activities, examines strategies for creating engaging investigations of digitized collections, and depicts key features of an online science investigation focused on the analysis of digitized specimens from a natural history collection.   • Representing Identity: Time for Radical Change
    Personal identity is complex, nuanced, dynamic, and core to how we see and interact with the world. Issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, and community engagement are all related to ways that museums understand, reflect, and represent identity. This poster shares results of an IMLS-funded effort to synthesize recent research conducted and published by graduate students across the country. The research included follow-up interviews and reflections from professionals and recommendations for authentically engaging with issues of representation in both internal and external practices of museums.   • What Does it Take to be a Professional in the ISL Field
    Ideas and expectations about professions and about the process of becoming a professional are changing as the nature and assumptions about the ways we learn and the ways we work evolve. Competency frameworks are used in some fields to describe the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and capabilities needed for that area of work. In the post-Covid world, competency frameworks may help institutions effectively and efficiently align institutional needs with individuals who have the skills, knowledge, and other competencies. Competency frameworks may also help individuals identify the strengths they offer and the strengths they want to develop to be competent and competitive.
