  • Racism, Unrest, and the Role of the Museum Field

    Contains 1 Component(s) Recorded On: 06/03/2020

Racism, Unrest, and the Museum Field

The murders of David McAtee and George Floyd and the resultant anger, fear, and hopelessness-fueled violence across our country follows the senseless killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and Breonna Taylor in recent weeks – and far too many others stemming back to the racial terror lynchings of the last century and the cruelty of slavery.

Compounding these racist acts is a global pandemic and financial crisis that is disproportionately affecting people of color. As museums set their sights on financial recovery and reopening, how do we ensure that we are centering equity and prioritizing the needs of our country’s black and brown communities and colleagues? How do we create a space for healing, and building authentic relationships across difference? How do we use what is an unbearable time for many, to come together in solidarity and use the strength of the museum field to fight racism across the country?

Join museum leaders, Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Secretary Lonnie Bunch, and Lori Fogarty for a conversation that helps us process the weight of the current moment together and inspires action as we look to rebuild our field and our society for the better. Questions and topics posed will reflect the discussions that take place during #AAMvirtual June 1-3.

    General Session- - June 2

AAM’s Annual Meeting is the only event of its scope and scale. It brings together museums of all types and sizes—from art and history museums to zoos and botanic gardens—to share ideas and make connections that are transformational. It’s a place where all museum professionals learn from one another, create partnerships, and leave inspired to make an impact on their museums, communities, and the world. In this unprecedented time, many of us are experimenting with new ways to connect, stay engaged, and provide meaningful online experiences.

  • Re-envisioning the Role of the Independent Museum Professional

    Contains 1 Component(s)

What kinds of support do museums of different sizes and scopes need right now? How can independent museum professionals help? This moderated discussion features museum leaders talking about their current and anticipated needs in the coming months as they consider strategies for reopening, recalibrating, and recovering in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. For example, what kinds of training, special expertise, facilitation, business modeling, design, coaching, or other services will be most needed? How can IMPs support institutions and their staff in ways that help build capacity and sustainability for the long term? What kinds of partnerships between IMPs and in-house museum staff might emerge?
